If
you want to turn heads but still want the utility of a wagon - consider
the 2011 Chevrolet HHR. First introduced in 2006, the HHR quickly
gained kudos for its retro looks. The HHR features a smooth ride, plenty
of
interior
room and hipster sensibility. Additionally, the HHR features pretty
good gas mileage - 22 miles per gallon in the city and 30 miles per
gallon on the highway. Not much has changed for the 2011 model
year - other than Chevy dropping the sportier SS model from the HHR lineup.
The 2011 Chevy HHR drives smoothly and offers a comfortable ride for the most part. Additionally, get the 2.4 liter engine and you'll garner pretty good acceleration on the highway. In drivability the HHR does well, especially against its nearest and most obvious competitor - the PT Cruiser - and features less body roll than the Cruiser. Generally speaking it does handle better than many other crossovers.
You
can't help but feel nostalgic when you look at this car, which is
modeled after a 1940s Suburban. Even if you've never seen one, the
styling is iconic. Chevy has managed to turn a utility hauler into an
attractive statement. Its high roof design means more interior room.
Exterior features include flared fenders, and 16, 17 or 18-inch wheels
that come standard, depending on the trim level you select. Also new for
this year are two more paint choices - Mocha Steel or Black Granite.
Inside
you'll find an attractive cabin with plenty of room. Visibility is good
(although not as good on the Panel for the obvious reason of it having
fewer windows) and the controls are well placed. Fold down the rear
seatbacks and front passenger side seat and you'll get over 58 cubic
feet of cargo space. Additionally, you get fit items up to 8 feet long
inside - great for bringing ladders or hauling the kids' sports
equipment. But there isn't too much extra small storage space. The 2011
HHR boasts seating for up to five people. It features a 60/40 split rear
seatback, which folds flat. Standard features include a CD stereo, air
conditioning and keyless entry. Options include a moon roof and heated
leather front seats. Safety features include traction control, an
electronic stability system, side curtain airbags, and antilock brakes -
all standard. A backup
camera is optional. The HHR was awarded the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's five-star crash rating
for front and side-impact crashes.
The
2011 Chevy HHR is offered in three trim levels: LS, 1LT and 2LT.
Additionally, buyers can opt for four or five-passenger hatchback wagon
or the HHR Panel. The HHR Panel is meant to be a commercial
vehicle.
As the name implies, the rear exterior windows are replaced with panels
and the rear seats are removed for maximum hauling capabilities.
Chevy
offers the HHR in two engine choices: the 2.2 -liter, four-cylinder
engine offered on the base model that yields 155 horsepower and the 2.4
liter, four-cylinder engine that yields 172 horsepower. Both can
run on either gas or up to 85 percent ethanol.
The
HHR LS (base model) features air conditioning, keyless entry, fold-flat
front passenger seat, OnStar, 16-inch steel wheels, cruise control,
60/40 split folding rear seat, and a six-speaker CD/MP3 stereo with
satellite radio and audio jack. A sunroof option is available.
The
1LT adds 16-inch body-colored mirrors, a power driver's seat and
16-inch alloy wheels. The 2LT features a sport tuned suspension, fog
lights, Bluetooth, 17-inch alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering
wheel with audio controls, and a Pioneer audio system. Options include
remote ignition, an iPod/USB interface, heated front seats, sunroof,
rearview camera, and heated front seats.
Chevy is also offering a 100,000 mile/5-year powertrain warranty - not only keeping up with the Joneses but leaving them behind.
Inexpensive,
nicely styled and relatively good fuel economy means that the HHR is
likely to be a good choice for families or buyers with a lot of people
or goods to haul back and forth. Add to that its versatility and
spaciousness and you have a hit - albeit one for those who like its
quirky styling. It's a wagon without the Mrs. Brady feel. See the latest
