About Bucks County

Bucks County, located in Pennsylvania's south eastern corner, has a total area of 622 square miles (607 square miles land, 15 square miles water). There are approximately 620,000 people within 23 boroughs and 31 townships. Founded in 1682 by William Penn, Bucks County has had a long and distinguished history. Penn named the county after Buckinghamshire, the Penn family home in England. The county seat was at Bristol from 1705 to 1726 when it was moved 10 miles north, to Newtown, which served as the county seat for 87 years. In 1752 the county, which originally extended to the New York Colony line, was reduced to its present boundaries. As settlement crept northward, agitation began for changing the county seat to a more central location. In 1810, Governor Simon Snyder signed an Act appointing a commission to select a new site. Today, Bucks County has a mix of preserved farmland, rolling hills, and commercial and residential development.

Bucks County resides in Pennsylvania, which has been known as the Keystone State since 1802, based in part upon its central location among the original Thirteen Colonies forming the United States, and also in part because of the number of important American documents signed in the state such as the Declaration of Independence. Among notable facts about this state, Pennsylvania is home to the nation's first zoo, the Philadelphia Zoo. It is also home to 121 state parks, which all feature free admission.
